Explosions ripple in the distant air, one after another, with deafening bass that drowns all other sounds. Streaks of light fly through the air, sparking and splintering and radiating. At first, the explosions were scattered and infrequent, but now I instinctively brace myself for the shockwave. Any second now, heat will transmit like a deadly radio signal in our direction. We jump in the bunker and crawl into the fetal position. Life preservation sends adrenaline through my veins and it hijacks all of my mental capacity. Nothing else matters.
