Tires slithering through the knee high water, hissing as the engine grumbles, vibrating through the chassis of the vehicle into my feet and legs. The cabin cool and dry as I crack the window, the muggy thick air seeps in through the sliver, a deluge of heat cascading down onto my face, instant sweet blossoming on my upper lip, salty. Brown shallow lakes dappling the vast landscape, muddy pools holding sturdy isolated trees hostage, occluded by deeper passages of water. Tropical air smells of earth and humidity, wraps its long sticky fingers around my body and tickles me, prickling my skin into hot flusters. Short rough shrubs scattered, stretching their necks above the water line to breathe. Birds standing proud on the tops of trees chattering and jeering at those who cannot fly. My heart races in excitement and awe at seeing such an extreme natural event. My family musing in the car, blurry sound as I’m focused on the glaring water, squinting at the reflecting light…
