Title: checkbook 2
Post by: Chris Dudley on April 12, 2018, 01:20:17 PM
Dribble of ink from the pen nib
Ink that sketches the date
The date, the amount, in numbers and words
The signature scrawled at the end.

This paper is smooth, thicker than some
Though not so thick as cardstock
It tears smoothly at the perforation
Itís loose and ready to send.

One last check, after three sixty months
The long term of a mortgage
One last check and that loan is done
Four orders of checkbooks for this,

A time of ending, a time of change
The scrabble reduced in effort
The balance check less crucial from now
The smaller bills less of a scramble.

In the back of a desk there are empty checkbooks
With their record of years of payment
Gathering dust in that slow way
of things shut out from the air.
