It clacks against the asphalt when dropped, but shines against the blackness in grey contrast, and is easily found and scooped up again. It is smooth and curved, though many of its fellows are not. They did not live for many years just under the current of a cool, clear stream and have retained much of their grittiness since separation from their mother-father stone. A slight earthy smell always lingers, even after itís cleaned, and it tastes slightly of salt and dirt. Extraordinarily, it is older than its holder, and it will, by no will of its own, outlast most things and beings -- unless perhaps it meets, in quick impact, something less brittle than itself.
