Early morning, I climb out of bed, pull on my robe and make my way down the creaking stairs with one eye open and only part of my brain turned on. I instinctively reach for the fridge handle and pull. The brightest light I have ever seen pours out and hits my eyes like a laser. My eyes squint and my body recoils slightly as if hit by a weapon. I think maybe even a slight groan. I collect myself and reach into the fridge for the carton of 2% milk. As I grip the carton, cold, smooth cardboard condensation meets my fingers. The full carton feels heavy to my half wakeless body. I turn, grab a bowl from the cupboard, a spoon from the drawer, and a box of my favorite Lucky Charms cereal form the pantry. I sit and struggle with the crinkly wax paper insert which is  always hard to get into and pour the loud cereal into the bowl. I start to eat in sleepy silence, my only companion a sad picture of a missing teen
