Maybe I Mean It More

No one planned to be here,
No one had this in mind.
You can’t say it just happened
It’s too tangled up in time.
No glaze of anticipation,
No hopechest to unbind,
The jitters feel remembered,
Someone hit rewind.
Solemn joy is present here
As we bless the ties that bind.
How can they mean what they used to mean
When they’re said a second time?

Now they mean I trust you
Though I’ve been hurt before.
Now they mean I mean it this time
Or maybe I mean it more.
Now they mean no secrets
But what we have to keep
To keep us from the poison
Of a past we won’t repeat.
To have, to hold, to cherish,
To honor for always,
To vow it for forever
For a second time today

Bridge

Blessings on this marriage
Made with eyes open wide.
May these vows be richer still
For taking a new flight.
Each must trust this promise
Take it as a sign,
You were made to drink you fill
Of these ties that bind.

You get one shot at perfect
‘Cause It’s made with purity.
Its lace and white and blushing
Hold a magic sanctity.
But here we’re no less solemn
In our complex mess
We’ve just got more to work with
And a chance at happiness.
So play the song and make the march
With our children close behind.
You know this is the very first time
We’re not jumping in this blind.

Repeat bridge
