They’re old and they’re worn, their padding’s all frayed, the slippers left by the bed
Yes it’s true that they’ve seem much better days, it’s summer wear flipflops instead
But the habit of winter, the habit of socks keeps the slippers in daily use
Trudge to the bathroom then make the coffee then stop to let the dogs loose.

Defend the slipper from a puppy’s envy, that a task for every hour
The slipper, the sneaker, the sock or the shoe, each one needs a good chew
Best to distract with a length of rope, a squeak toy or piece of bone
All that footwear can’t be destroyed in a day by a puppy alone.

Those old sneakers you send to the dump have holes worn in their soles
The cracked leather of worn out work boots gets heaved when spring cleaning’s all done
The slippers remain though old and frayed, disreputable to say the least
They stay in their place at the foot of the bed then slip on to the breakfast feast.
