11/6/2017 - Queen

Thick burgundy velvet drapes from my shoulders to the floor like a heavy stage curtain. My head pounds under the weight of a solid gold crown. My heart flutters under the pressure of expectation. A kingdom in the palm of my hand; an entire country awaiting my beck and call. Inside my voice is shrill and panicked. It was never supposed to be me. A fluke accident and now Iím the decision maker; the queen. Outside the castle walls an anxious crowd barks for my appearance. Wet hands grasp a scroll. A meticulously rehearsed speech of all they desire to hear and expect from their new commander. The air is bitter from the lingering smoke after the battle outside our city walls. Victory is bittersweet for with all who perished it still feels as if we lost. Towering wooden doors creak open slowly and blinding light comes pouring in. The crowd roars and I walk towards my loyal subjects with a heavy head and an open heart.
