Hereís smoke in your eye as you shift your seat
Move to the shift of the wind
Pop and the sparks rising at you
The wind now follows you.

Itís the dance with the fire, the dance with the wind
Hop over the pile of branches
Itís still getting hot, flames are leaping
Itíll settle as the night fills.

This fire pit gets used quite bit
Here where the river runs past
The cattle drive yearly comes through
And the buffalo hunt before that.

Itís cottonwood and that means some smoke
As the coffee boils in the pot
The stars are so clear in the sky tonight
The cowboy could sing a song.

Itís  a song that they sing when the wind dies
And the smoke rises straight to the stars
And the river murmurs and the horses shift
And the slow world sways with the song.
