Theyíre never so nice on the speakerís side
Like backstage behind the set
The edges unfinished, water stains on the shelf
The electronics patched in with raw wires.

Thereís sweat on the palms of most who stand here
Thereíre butterflies in their guts
Itís good that the podium hides their knees
That knock a bit in the lights.

A podium built to hide all that
Look good from the front and thatís it
Hold a glass and pages of speech
Let the palms squeeze on the lip.

The speakerís breath is shuddered in
After the intro thatís partly flubbed
Imagine the audience in their underwear
Then smile and open it up.

Speak from the heart, thatís the advice
When the heart shrinks then really what then?
Speak from the heart and let them all know
The new thing that theyíve never known.
