A scrap of territory, squatting on a stoop
A flag of presence checks the way
Demand for recognition, the way ladies block a door
The calls a sign not to be ignored.

Maybe that’s the consequence of living in a box
In a box next to others in the same
That stairs are there for access is really not the point
The stairs are there to see and be seen.

The stoop has its order, its up and its down
Like hens in a coop, they’ve got their chain
And some are not welcome on the stoop at all
Not hooked into the links of the chain.

The steps to the basement run down the side
No one sits there though those are also stairs
They don’t make the display of sitting up on the stoop
They’re for nighttime and bums to hide away.
