Pointer to the pole star
Ursa Major, The bear
The guardian of the cold
Veiled in aurora, a bitter night
But clear, the frame of the firmament.

Youíve got a twin in brave Orion
Both of you rampant so bold
Guarding your great swath of the sky
Orionís guides the bright dog star
While youíve swung by the pole.

Astronomers love Vega
Their measure of all things
Itís color clean clear in the night
A long set of zeros in a table of magnitudes
The standard of all candle light.

And the telescopes track Vega
Sliding overhead
The measure of all theyíll observe
But pole star and dog star hold the limits
The shape of the Northern skies.
