Long ago, the released excon
Could get a job at the carwash
There to dream of the executive suite
The secretary, the corner office.

Rub down the hoods with a shamie
Wearing and apron of rubber
Smile at the girls, scowl at the guys
Dream and maybe start night school.

Nowadays, the carwash takes coins
Takes tokens, discover or visa
It runs itself, a robot machine
No work for the con out of prison.

The soap comes in rainbow over the windows
The shamies spin on an axle
Slop at the sides, the hood the roof
Clear the grime from the road crew.

So there it is, the excon’s job
The shoveling of heated asphalt
Leave a film on passing cars
That wander now through the carwash.

What kind of song comes from hot asphalt dreams
The heat and the sweat and the coughing
The carwash excon had a carwash blues song
What’s the song for the crew in the hot sun?
