A wallet like a mousetrap, hard to pry open
Hard to open to spend a dollar
A wallet like a bank vault, so tightly sealed
No use for spending at all.

And so it is with a checkbook, just try to lay it flat
Try to bring down a ballpoint pen
Its spine resists, must be forced down
The pen tries to thread tiny lines.

A checkbook at the grocery store, it’s bound to jump
Jump and land on the floor
A line seven deep waits impatiently
For the scribbling to finely be complete.

And yet they’ll sell you vanity with a desertscape
Pastel cactus and boulders so faint
Pay a little extra for these faded images
And still awkward to write all the same.
