If not a donut, then what?
I ask of a quick breakfast
A donut and coffee like a beat cop
A breakfast then out on the street.

Iíve made the donuts a time or two
Their doughy rings sizzling in oil
Itís not much different from making spice cake
But thicker than a baking batter.

Hot donuts draining on paper plates
The kitchen hot from the oil
A project for Winter in Crispy Cream land
Real donuts are not baked, they are fried.

My donut holes are in the shape of a heart
The cookie cutter for Valentineís
Sprinkled with cinnamon mixed with sugar
Theyíre sweethearts cooled in a line.

A sweetheart fried in sizzling oil
Fished out with a slotted spoon
Cooled on a plate and sprinkled
A gift of the heart meant for you.
