Poles are bent for a modern tent
Poles of thin fiberglass
Elastic cord threaded through sections
Twelve feet, maybe longer.

Poles are bent like a fishing rod
Their flex part of the tension
No longer stretched canvas staked down tight
The poles shape the ripstop nylon.

The tent is screened against mosquitos
Or flies or even rabbits
Itís topped with a fly to keep off the rain
Itís a compact sheltering thing.

Winslow Homer painted some tents
Along with staring Union soldiers
Stare over the camp as evening comes
One more day until the next battle.

Tents of canvas pitched on stiff poles
Sticks that they cut for forage
Canvas tents and wool uniforms
Some singing beside the fire.
