Mud we sank into up to the ankle
Mud that sucked wind with each step
Mud of the spring, the thaw, the wet
Mud of the field in its change.

Mud that got deeper, a soft kind of clay
Mud now up to the calf
Mud that stole boots off of our feet
Soaked socks pulling boots out by hand.

The warm of the air, the chill of the mud
Tracks show the path of the brave
Squlching in deeper, egg each other along
At the ankle, thatís the time to save face.

Holler for help, stuck in the mud
the boot edge just an inch from succumbing
Smell of the spring, earth awakening
And hungry for boots for a meal.

Charge of the mothers out into the field
The howling of kids out of boots
Carried to solid ground for a scolding
The boots left stuck in the mud.
