Donut

The sweet, rich aroma fills the air, the floors squeak with boots trampling dirty melted snow. The instant espresso machine grinds and howls and the blemished cashier smiles as she asks what the guy in a worn out brown jacket would like. He scratches his wiry white whiskers as he stares past her to the board above and mumbles out his order.

In she comes, her voice bursting with excitement, her little pink frilly boots sliding through the puddles on the floor. Everything is bright and exciting, the worn out “caution” sign intrigues her and she wants to play with it. Most eyes turn towards her and they curl at the corners into a smile. The pure joy is easily forgotten and those that once knew it can’t help but be caught up in the moment. The most disgruntled and jaded in the group still stare as though in a museum and the entire world was behind two inch thick glass, cold and uninviting.

Her blond loosely curled hair bounces as she strides up, her glowing cheeks look up to me and her mouth smiles as she asks. Yes we can get the pink one with sprinkles and hash browns too, and her little feet brim over with elastic energy, hopping up and down in excitement. The whole world shines and calls out “good morning” as we walk out, faces bright.
