I was six when Bill Nye started me on the path writing secret messages in lemon juice, destined for a flame to give power to the words but written to be secret and for no one. Only once was I allowed to hold my message to the candle and watch the deep yellow letters come through, a missive from five minutes ago, a "return to sender," but it was already ancient. In my mind I was not a noble spy, sending codes in microfilm hidden in the ink of a love letter; warning my fellow countrymen that the enemy fleet was making its way through Gibraltar. Instead I was a rogue, a rat, hiding behind a corner or the slide on the playground...not understanding that just because I was there no scandal would come to light, I would not be wiser I am just another shy kid trying to figure out the mystery of the people around him.
