Tulips in February, pushed out of the ground
Tulips lying in wait
Tulips’ sharp spears slitting Fall leaves
Clusters of verdant rising.

Why not early, crocus have bloomed
Forsythia in early March
Trees in bud, their pale haze
Ready to breeze the polen.

Daffodils too, a month early
So far just one stand
But they’re up and ready all over the place
In the wood, in the fields, along the roads.

A strong Nor’easter got me moving
Tied down bins and plastic lawn chairs
Shifted and old aquarium
That sat on tulips since Fall.

There they were, pale shoots
Push hard on their sides
Clean up for the wind shows I was late
For tulips in a rush for the Spring.
