Mask of mirth, mask of sorrow
Symbols of the play
Chorus chanting out doomsday
Furies bear him away.

Blinded poet
Blind Orestes
Can three daughters give you eyes
To see your sorrow king?

In the Green Room they’re ready
Mascara and lip paint
Three witches high thee to the heath
Let Banquo be the thief.

It’s all a play, nothing more
Pretend, a silly thing
A silly thing of wrought display
To catch the conscience of a king.

Wipe off mascara
Cold cream for cake
The collar of each costume
With face paint soaked well in.

Simper out the back stagedoor
Leave all that behind
Such things as dreams is all you are
Melt from the divine.
