Cluster of red now in April
Ahead of some daffodils
Early tulips while thin snow
Makes a sad dance in the air.

Early tulips while violets bloom
Next we’ll see gladiolas
Compete for red, compete for height
Compete for early blooming.

Unsettled season, unsettled birds
The woodpecker’s scooping flight
They’re cutting trees while eaglets hatch
Their rules all wrong, off kilter.

The tulips stand in a cluster of red
Thin snow swirls in the air
Speak to the birds, apologize
For the questions your sweet shapes raise.
