Gunnels for blood, those altars of yore
The slaughter at the godsí table
Auguries of the godsí mood and mind
In the guts spilled out for inspection.

Smoke rising in a dark column
On a still day at the temple
Offerings given for appeasement
The smell of the grease for pleading.

Gods or ghosts, hungry for life
For blood, for fire, for victims
Cloth them in blood, wreath them in smoke
Make them mortal to hear their voices.

Off at the oracal, the poison vapors
Return the smoke of the offerings
The sybils writhe, convulse and speak
The fate of the kingdom of altars.
