An apple in each cheek bulging as he blew
The trumpet pushed back on the lips
Gone over to jazz, to the instrument
Sweat streaming in the stage lights.

You see it in the old cheeks become folds
That fill out like a puffer fish
A blader of air, a resonator
The trumpet blowing on the scales.

Tuba players too, dancing in old shoes
Turning their horn mouths round and round
New Orleans swing trumpet, slings the beat
Trombones circling in the air.
