"Were you making fun of James?"  He said, looking like a new-sprung Jack from his box.

My face began to warm mysteriously, like a sunburn.  A scorched, dry lump in my throat that I urgently needed to swallow, and I knew that it was as visible to him as the midday sun.

"Yes."

Boing!  Jack jumped again.

"YOU DID?"  But this time he looked more like a wounded teddy bear.  I had betrayed my good upbringing, his good name, and his good friend.

Was my friendship with James just a hoax?  Was I really the mean-spirited person who could so easily have turned on someone and gone with the crowd?  Or did I just make a mistake?

"You need to apologize," he said.  Already I was feeling better, my face cooler.  Now that I could make amends, make it right.
