Layers of deep dark red petals suspended like wine in a glass atop a hearty green stem. I ran my fingers down the solid waxy stem dodging prickly thorns, pulling my prized rose from the bouquet of love flowers centered in a display at our local florist. This was the first rose I presented to my lover, a cliche yet seemingly necessary gesture I would never forego. The cloudy water dripped from the angle cut in the stem, leaving a few droplets on the muddy tile floor. I squeaked my way up to the cashier and she wrapped the single rose in opaque plastic with clear swirls in the shape of whimsical hearts, cinched at the end with a red rubber band leaving about 10 inches of the stem exposed that she then plunged into a plastic vase.
