The cement has set on the fireplace. On the sides, we carve our initials with a wooden stick, marking our territory. The first fire is ready to go, and for the first time all summer we cannot wait for the sun to go down. Paper crumples, sticks snap and break under the strength of our hands, and heavy logs rest atop the pyramid. Sulfur from the match ignites and smells quickly of rotten eggs, but the smoke takes over now. Paper turns bright orange, sticks ignite, and we have fire. Blasts of heat hit us, even though itís summer itís radiation warms us like a bowl of soup in winter. Graham crackers, Hersheyís chocolate, and burnt marshmallows are símored for all.
