The light drains from an October, light grey fades to an indigo that blends with the sea.

Mummified in layers, I pull my corduroy jacket tighter, the jogging bottoms under my jeans compress warm flesh against cold bones.

Pebbles crunch under the soles of cheap trainers, dad stoops over a funeral of broken pieces skirting board, stair bannister and other collateral from his diy.

The sea sighs, as it rolls pebbles around the stoney shore. The smell of fire lighters ooze through the air, and the scratch and fizz of a match fills ignites a buzz of anticipation. Dry wood begins to laugh with flaming crackles, a glow of warmth chases away the cold ghost of evening chill.
