a streetlight shines down on a man reduced to rags
pants torn and shirtless
on a bed of cardboard sheets and newspaper
his eyes are dark and tired
he sits, back against the cold steel frame propping up the light
an empty canister of coins before him
he smells unshowered,
days, maybe weeks
he's unshaved, the hair on his head grown out long drooping over his face
its like he's run out of words to speak
he needs help but doesn't know how to ask
his legs are littered with scabs
some still bleeding new blood
his fingernails are long and dark
his mind seems lost
my gut moves for him
as if god wants me to act
i reach into my back pocket and pull out my wallet
i open it up and spread the warm leather
i grab the only dollar i carry and drop it into the bucket
he doesn't speak, he doesn't move
but i take one last look, turn and walk away
cars pass on the street
assholes honk disturbing the peace
it doesn't matter if its day or night
the taco truck stand in the distance seems alive
bright glowing lights illuminate the kitchen for late night drunks
a man who's had a little too much to drink strums his two-string guitar
he's looking for a dollar
I'm fresh out.
what brought me here, to LA
certainly not the things i am seeing on a daily basis...
