its just before 8am
the school bell rings and children scatter through the halls to their respective classrooms
teachers stand in each of the doors welcoming the kids with a smile
a hand rests on my shoulder, catching me a little by surprise
turning my head and looking up i notice the principal smiling down at me while holding the triangular folded american flag
it looked so neat and tidy, not a wrinkle in sight, mom would have been proud of the ironing job
i remembered seeing something like it at my grandfathers funeral as military guns were shooting off
i was really young then
with a warm smile, she asks if i could be the one attach and raise it up the pole outside in front of the school
i graciously accepted and she gently handed it over to me
it was only cloth, but i handled it like like a box of fragile glass
taking each step with caution as to not slip or trip
rumor around the school had it that flags should be burned if they ever fell to the ground
i walked out the double-doors and toward the tiny hill of green grass in the middle of the bus-way...
