Magnolia now and holly
Broadleaf evergreens
Spots in the bare woods, the holly trees
Rhododendron close by walls.

These are the leaves of Winter
And needles of pine and fir
A place to hide for sparrows
Though bracken does them well.

On a cold cold day a hawk perches low
Feathers formed in a ball
Face to face I talk to him
Of Winterís bitter cold.

Magnolia leaves keep their shine
For a while when they fall
Glisten on earth, a fallen hawk
Until the weather shifts.

Holly shows a red berry
Just the female tree
Prepare the wood for daffodils
The yellow burst of Spring.
