Bombs burst, producing a deafening blast of sound.  With each burst, the sky lit up like it was daylight, only for a curtain of darkness to immediately be slammed down.  As each wave passed under the ship, the wood creaked and moaned with exhaustion.  The taste of gunpowder spread throughout the air.  Enemy soldiers moved around like ants on the barricade, becoming more visible with each new wave.  Each man performed his task, firing a gun, steering the ship, helping the wounded.  A bomb burst above the ship, a downpour of steel and fire onto the ship.  But above it all was the flag.  Red, white, and blue, tattered, but still hanging.  Defiant the flag flew, no matter the odds.
