Half-naked trees bowed, trying vainly to hold on to the last shred of leafy dignity. Men held onto railings, legs apart, mouth firm. Women braved occasional whipping from wayward hair as they struggled to tuck stray tendrils into hair bands.

Perfumes sweet and strong clashed, tangled.

Children hooted letting their voices be carried to lands unseen. Kites pulled on their strings stretched taut against soft fleshy fists. As the kites vied against each other, hearts beat faster.

The dragon tailed kite string cut my palm and drew blood as it caught an upward drift. The string slipped through my fingers. I held my palm to my mouth preferring metal to the salt of losing.
