The dry, felted fuzziness of a woolen cat's toy. It's leather strip of a tail, torn to shreds. Only one beady black eye remains. Cradling this ball of felted fur is nothing like the real thing. A mouse's fur is waxy soft. It's cold tiny claws gently scratch my palm while it's tail slips through my fingers and tickles the skin along the inside. It's whole body warmly vibrates as it shuffles around inside the cave of my hands. A cold, bristling nose brushes along in the inside edge of my thumb, straining for the light and air my childhood hands let in. A slight pause.
