Sky turns black in the middle of the day. A light wind rustles the leaves of the great oak tree in the front yard. Otherwise things have fallen eerily silent until one lone car hurries by the small gravely street, kicking up small pebbles in its path. I stopped our game of pickle in the middle, holding the half-filled rubber ball for a few instants, gazing into that sky then looking towards my younger siblings. Their eyes grow bigger, looking at me like I know what to do. In the distance, a loud blaring horn sounds. The tornado alarm for our small town in northern Wisconsin. Run. I call to them, my lungs not able to sustain the cry for as long as Id like. Like a sheep dog, I circle behind the 2 of them, herding them toward the house and into the basement. I turn around and see it. Hovering on the horizon. A thing of beauty, spiralling, moving forward.
