The basement door hid the terrors that lurked beneath the house.   While keeping a barrier between the surface and the underworld, the musty smell of the basement permeated all around the entrance.  White paint slowly peeled off, as if it was in no hurry at all.  A door knob, speckled with rust and black paint, required a twist before it would let one pass.  The touch was unsettling.  Instead of being smooth as a rock, it scraped against my hand.  Even with a slight turn, the door knob almost shook itself lose, what was left of the metal parts squeaking as it opened.  I looked down the stairs, my spine gave a slight shiver as I reach for the light.
