Swinging in the shade under sappy trees, light paints patterns on your neck. Some of the strings are frayed, and I think at any moment we could be losing to gravity's pull, laughing with a bruised bum, purple circle coloring the skin. String, like the yoyo I used to spend hours on, tight loop cutting circulation, tip of my finger sausage red, the familiar zip as the bright plastic careens down the slope, backspin heavy on my hand. I did it to impress the girls, nervous sweat and faux confidence, the world on a string, literally a little earth my eyes wide for approval, sanding concentration. It didn't work. School lunches of flaky corn bread and milk I open the wrong side it falls through my--
