The metal brace was on his leg. It strengthened it. The freak accident had left his right leg upper thigh muscle paralyzed and now he had to wear the brace. He also used a walking stick. One day in the hallway I bumped into him. I mean I literally bumped into him. I smacked against the brace with my knee. The brace was hard and solid. “Oww!” I wailed when I smacked against it. It felt solid and heavy. Bill just laughed at me. Then in a mocking fashion he pretended to smack me with the walking stick. I told him he should have some kind of warning system. Maybe a beeping sound like that one that trucks made when they were backing up. At the same time I wondered what it would be like to have to wear a brace all the time. It would probably set off metal detectors, like at the airport. Also you probably have to take it off when you take a shower. Then there’s the whole issue of chafing.
