I open the thick wooden door, music escapes outside, sound of scales in G flat and 16th note trumpet parts, glint of the horns off long sweep of incandescent light. Plaid shirt, a pretty face I look shyly towards the pianos. My hand holds the hickory sticks, chocolate milk burps and jabbing jokes but we are all business now, eyes focused on our teacher's hands. Taste of anticipation in the air, a slight prick of nerves I count us in, bringing back the dead through jazz standards. The air is dense, immediate, my mouth forces a calm breath and we're off.
