Getting back to this after a couple of years away...

Forever. Cathedrals are supposed to be forever. Hundreds of years to build and then they just stick around, never razed to build something else, just maintained as needed by the deep pockets of the Catholic Church, funded by the shallow pockets of people like my parents. But then there is fire. Fire is the one thing hmmm maybe earthquakes? that can bring down a cathedral. And fire is bad, very bad.

Heartwarming smoky aroma like a campfire but its not a place to gather and relax its the smell of destruction, ashes floating in the air, grey puffs of smoke floating up up up to be taken by the wind and delivered all around the planet. Crashing banging collapse as exquisite antique prayer-filled room after room implodes with a whoosh. Wet cheeks and open mouths in dismay because the whole of Paris knows, sees what is happening. Eternity cut short. Saints exploding into arrows, knives of glass, what hasnt melted in the solar fusion temperatures at the core. A jury-rigged incomprehensible system whats a complicated system without training?

Ground shivers with each new collapse. Wailing assails the ears. Wetness from eyes clears particles and grief. Wailing people, mouths, cars, alarms. Unexpected heat gusts, belches forth. More and more grey, choking sputtering grey above and around. Acrid on the tongue and catching in the throat, ashes invade.
