Since I was just a boy
I was always fascinated
By the beastly claws and pitch black eyes
That were so universally hated.

The beasts that hide among us
And lead us to our doom
The monsters in our closets
That creep into our rooms.

The creature of the black lagoon
Stood out amongst the others
A creature which we hunted down
Instead of finding in our cupboards.

The demon never harmed a soul
Until it was provoked
Like a dog that only bites
After it is aggressively poked.

As I pondered this injustice
My thoughts began to wonder
Of the many other innocents
That we have labelled as monsters.

The fear of what we do not know
Often leads to bloodshed
And the virtuous are cast as villains
In the stories we are read.
