Catcher's mask, a bird's nest of thick black wires covering my face. Sliding and slipping on my soft pubescent little league face while at the same time pressing red marks on my cheeks. Straps like seatbelts hold this child-seat around my precious cargo of a head, while speeding balls, wild drivers, and bats fly around my head. I still flinch when something is thrown at me, afraid I will miss it, and be hit again. I resist the temptation to close my eyes, and run through the mental list of instructions necessary to catch something. That is my natural reflex. I wish there were a sport that rewarded such behavior. I loved the cold snow cones after the game, sugary water and ice in a melting paper cone. And bubble gum as firm as
