My soccer tennis shoes were replaced by cleats. Eclipsed really. Little K-cups all over the bottom, black plastic shining like an insect. Not a dull leather glow, but shiny. White racing stripes on the side to warn the world how fast I had become with this new weapon in my arsenal- foot power. My foot flopped around inside, like an almost dead fish, and probably smelled the same. We always got shoes a little too big, to grow into. I had a fake Dr. Scholls insert to visibly add cushioning inside. It felt the same, each foot plant landed hard into the solid earth, but the off-white insoles gave more surface area for the funk to grow. Black polyester shoe laces shone equally proud, atop these indestructible cleats as I made sure to tie double knots. The cleats clattered on the bicycle pedal on the way to practice
