The common everyday daily wheat-bread colored bar stool, silently carries out its job, carries its load. Not just the weight of my body and the indignity of always kissing my bottom, it functions as micro desk and step stool. Who knows what other lives my stool had before me, since I bought it at a thrift store. The previous owner's name in capital letters on the bottom in blue marker, covered by my name in red. The flying saucer top, with paint globs, and finish worn through or maybe just fallen off and legs descending like landing gear. I can feel in my legs the exact place the stool pinches after 30 minutes of seated practice on the double bass, the way my pants feel thinner there and bunched up all at the same time.
