Yearly - Object Writing 20 March
You know the event is coming, you’re looking on from the distance as if you’re gazing into a flat-top sea but as you get closer you notice that the wall of blue green actually is writhing, like a bucket of maggots, those little meringue wave tops start to stare at you, then with windows wound […]

Standoff Object Writing 26 March
Hardened courses of action swing about like helicopters searching for an escaped prisoner at night. Spotlights of action spring up like targets on a shooting range, the opponent is in the thick hair trigger. We’re slobbering dogs with sharp yellowed teeth growling head to head against each other, the sounds forming in the hollow spot […]

Real Estate - Object Writing 23 March
He’s standing in the quiet street, a shattering of people around him like a bomb’s just gone off. No-one wanting to get too close to the hole. Whiffs of cordite in the air, soon he’ll be shooting off a spray of words with his automatic mouth. He reloads with a sting of luke warm coffee. […]

Karaoke - Object Writing21 March

Another commando singer scales the shakey platform , hoping their voice will hold up ok. The speakers have been doling out a full frontal assault tonight, booming like the guns of Navarone or Big Bertha [Giant world war 1 Gun], the audience recoiling in horror at some of the salvos that have been shot across their bows. This time the strict waltz beat gets feet tapping as he dons a wide brimmed cowboy hat…. “In a bar in Toledo, across form the Depot….” you know the rest. I take in a bitter tide of beer, it helps him to sound less out of tune, he’s almost making it. I think of those two cats who sometimes call to each other in the night from beyond the neighbour’s fence, just not quite there, standing at the checkout having forgotten your wallet, counting out the jingling loose change and the fortuitous five dollar bill…. but , not quite there…. “You picked a fine to leave me Lucille……”. I guess Kenny would be sort of happy to know someone was murdering one of his tunes. I swear I can see some one with a pair of hands ringing the speaker connections, there IS murder going on here tonight.

Of course I taste confidence as my turn approaches, but with each step toward the platform a transformation occurs. Those steel rods of musical ‘righteousness’ start to become wobbly rubber bands, and as the first few bars ring out the doubt seems as tall as the Eifel tower, but then the first note seems to bring everything down to the point of a tornado and the right note is delivered. How does that happen I wonder? How do you hear a note and then throw it out? Luck, Skill, experience. Human mystery why some can and some can’t. The audience’s disinterested applause suggest that things went OK, who’s REALLY listening anyway. It’s just our five minutes of fame…….

Yearly - Object Writing 20 March

You know the event is coming, you re looking on from the distance as if you re gazing into a flat-top sea but as you get closer you notice that the wall of blue green actually is writhing, like a bucket of maggots, those little meringue wave tops start to stare at you, then with windows wound down you smell it; the salty ozone a reminder of freedoms past. You wind down the window and hear the tyres whistling on the road but you also hear a sonorous long bass note in the key of tar. Now you can see that some of these whitecaps are actually a good couple of metres high and they curl over like high jumpers and do a tympani roll into the surging kaleidoscope of water.

This is how it is with your event, and now you re at the point where your about to paddle out into that maelstrom to meet the tidal wave. All year you ve been following the recipe of previous years, your wall of post it notes has filtered down to become a spider-web Excel spreadsheet with questionable connections to other work-flow models, arrangements have been telegraphed through tired phones, repetitious email and scribbly fax. The surfers are ready on shiny boards faced in toward the nervous shore waiting for the big one, they know it s coming, the inevitability of it. The taste of anticipation is dry and nervous as the swell begins to lift as another wave cycle ticks by on the clock as another surf board calendar day is torn off the wall .

Seasick - Object Writing 18 March
Huddled in a stiff upright chair, trying to lull myself into a doze, but the rollicking motion of the struggling boat keeps throwing me awake. There’s a disorientation, one of those ‘eyes adjusting as you go into a tunnel from bright daylight’ moments, the world is a bit fuzzy. Flocks of spray are flying past […]

Rough around the edges

Rough around the edges
Rough around the edges, somewhat fragile , like reaching out with a walking cane, cane is tapping along the ground, sounding out the direction forward, hesitant. Cringing, like after a hangover or the way you flinch at a loud sound, like it makes you jump backward, a few days growth making a small carpet on […]

Landed Object writing 12 March
Luminous green lettering swelters from suspended televisions announcing that other flights have made it. The overstuffed cabin bag follows obediently like a pet as I haltingly stumble down, glazed linoleum walk-ways . Sounds and echoes of other feet and mumbled telephone conversations clatter into my cringing ears.LANDED,again another reason to believe, that this monstrous lump […]

French Bread - Object writing 14 March
It’s a beached submarine stranded on the table, a police batton, ready to belt those taste sensators into submission. Cuttting into it with hand saw slices of the slippery bread knife, each faltering bump and corrugation jarringly transmitted up my arm. Mirrored blade is enveloped by the spongy quagmire of springy whiteness. One more soldier […]

Savings Account - Object Writing 13 March
Passwords open halting digital tumblers and a steady connection is established, nimble fingers punch heavily at springing keyboard . A restaurant menu of choice appears. ‘Every day account, special account , business account, ’savings’ account. Just a few dollars a week have added up over time to a reasonable sum, the latest bonus has filled […]
